Are Anti-Feminists Influencing your Fashion Decisions?

Thinspiration

That's what social media calls posting pictures of severely underweight women to "inspire" other women to lose weight. There have been a few trends along the way: the ever present thigh gap, the bikini bridge, and the latest - the A4 challenge.

There's a problem with that list. One of those things is not like the others. An anti-feminist sect on 4Chan claimed responsibility for creating the bikini bridge to show how weak women are regarding their body image1.

The worst part is that it absolutely took over the internet. For weeks before they claimed responsibility, women who post thinspiration were posting new pictures of themselves and others to promote the bikini bridge.

So, my question to you is:

Have you ever stopped and asked yourself why you want to take part in these thinspiring trends?

Even if you know you can't fit behind an A4 sheet of paper (I mean, it's all about how close it is to the camera, lol), there's a part of you that sees these trends and wishes you could. but why?

I do not believe that fashion itself is anti-feminist (obviously), but I think there are specific trends that come out that are or can be. As women, it falls on us to ask why we're striving for a specific look. Why are we wishing and dreaming our lives away over something on the surface? Could we be doing more with ourselves?

The next time you see a photo of a woman who is impossibly thin and feel that ache that you wish you looked like her, stop and ask yourself, "Why? Why am I not good enough on my own?"

Then head to the gym. Or the pizza parlour. Or the homeless shelter. Do something that makes you feel good for you rather than trying to change yourself for someone else.
